Are Sustainable Phone Cases Actually Sustainable?
Bioplastic, recycled TPU, plant-based — which 'eco' claims hold up and which are greenwashing.
Phone cases are a small but real source of plastic waste — most people own 2–3 per year. 'Sustainable' cases try to fix that, with mixed success.
Claims that actually mean something
- Made-to-order — no overproduction, no landfill leftovers.
- Compostable bioplastic certified by TÜV or BPI — breaks down in industrial composting.
- Recycled TPU with a stated percentage (e.g. '70% post-consumer recycled').
Claims that are mostly marketing
- 'Plant-based' with no percentage — could be 2%.
- 'Eco-friendly packaging' — fine, but the case itself is still plastic.
- 'Biodegradable' without a certified standard — in landfills, nothing biodegrades.
The bigger move
Keep the case longer. A high-quality printed case you use for 2 years is more sustainable than swapping a compostable one every 3 months because it fell apart.
