How To Make A Phone Case (At Home And Professionally)
Two real ways to make a custom phone case — the DIY kitchen version and the way printing studios do it.
There are two honest paths to making a phone case. The DIY route is fun for a one-off; the studio route is what brands like Miarobi use to make cases that actually survive a year of pocket wear.
DIY: customize a clear case
- Start with a blank clear TPU or hybrid case for your exact phone model.
- Print your design on glossy photo paper, slightly smaller than the case back.
- Trim, slide it inside the case (between phone and back), and snap closed.
- Optional: seal with Mod Podge on the OUTSIDE of a hard case for a permanent finish.
Professional: UV print on a hardshell
This is how proper custom cases are made. A blank polycarbonate case goes into a flatbed UV printer, the design prints directly onto the back in layers of CMYK + white ink, and a UV lamp cures it instantly. The result doesn't peel, scratch, or fade like sticker-style DIY.
What you can't really DIY
- MagSafe magnets — you can't add them after the fact.
- Raised camera lip — needs an injection-molded shell.
- True drop protection — requires multi-material engineering.
When DIY makes sense
Birthdays, gifts, one-off events. For everyday use, ordering a UV-printed case from a small brand costs about the same as the DIY supplies and lasts ten times longer.
