How To Clean A Clear Phone Case (Without Damaging It)
A 5-minute routine that removes yellowing, pocket gunk, and oily fingerprints from clear TPU and polycarbonate cases.
Clear cases yellow because of UV light and skin oils — not because they're dirty. But surface gunk makes the yellowing look ten times worse. A proper clean buys you another 3–4 months before the case actually has to be replaced.
What you need
- Warm water + a drop of dish soap
- A soft toothbrush
- Microfiber cloth
- Optional: isopropyl alcohol (70%) for stubborn marks
Step by step
1. Pop the case off the phone. Never clean it while installed. 2. Soak the case in warm soapy water for 5 minutes. 3. Scrub corners, button cutouts, and the camera ring with the toothbrush. 4. Rinse under running water until the soap is gone. 5. Dry fully with the microfiber cloth — moisture trapped between case and phone can damage the lens coating.
What not to use
- Bleach or acetone — they cloud the plastic permanently.
- Magic erasers — they micro-scratch the surface and speed up yellowing.
- Hot water — TPU warps above 60°C.
Why your case still looks yellow
UV-induced yellowing is a chemical change in the plastic itself. No cleaning can reverse it. If yours is past the point of cleaning, switch to a printed or tinted case — those don't yellow visibly.
