Do MagSafe Cases Work With Wireless Charging?

Yes — and they often charge faster. Here's exactly how MagSafe cases interact with Qi, Qi2, and standard wireless chargers.

Short answer: yes. A MagSafe-compatible case works with any Qi wireless charger and gets the full 15W speed on official MagSafe pucks. The magnets are passive — they don't block charging, they just align your iPhone perfectly on the coil.

How MagSafe cases charge

A real MagSafe case has a ring of magnets and a small NFC tag embedded in the back. When you place the phone on a MagSafe charger, the magnets snap it into the exact center of the charging coil. That alignment is why MagSafe is more energy-efficient than older Qi setups — less heat, more watts to the battery.

MagSafe vs. Qi vs. Qi2

  • MagSafe charger: up to 15W (25W on iPhone 15 Pro and newer with a 20W+ adapter).
  • Qi2 charger: up to 15W, same magnetic alignment standard.
  • Standard Qi pad: 5–7.5W, no alignment — slower but it still works.

When MagSafe cases stop working

Fake or no-name 'magnetic' cases that only have a metal ring (no magnets) will not trigger the MagSafe handshake. You'll get slow Qi charging instead of 15W. Always look for the official MagSafe label or a documented N52 magnet array.

Does case thickness matter?

Up to about 3mm of plastic between the phone and the charger is fine. Anything thicker (popsockets, wallets, thick rugged cases) can drop charging speed or stop it entirely.

FAQ

Will a MagSafe case scratch my charger?
No. The case sits between the phone and the charger, and the magnets pull it flat so there's no rubbing.
Can I use a MagSafe case on a regular Qi pad?
Yes. You'll just charge at standard Qi speeds (5–7.5W) instead of the 15W MagSafe rate.
