Are phone case materials safe?

Short answer: yes for normal handling. TPU, polycarbonate and silicone are the same plastics used across mainstream consumer products. A case shouldn't smell strongly of solvent or leave residue on your hand — if it does, return it.

Are phone case materials safe to handle?

The materials used in mainstream phone cases — thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), polycarbonate (PC), and silicone — are the same plastics used in a huge range of consumer products, from medical device housings to kitchenware to children's toys. In their solid, finished form they are considered safe for normal skin contact. They aren't food, and the case isn't intended to be chewed on, but everyday handling is fine.

What is TPU, and what is polycarbonate?

TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) is a flexible plastic that absorbs shock — it's why so many cases have a softer inner layer. Polycarbonate is a rigid, transparent plastic used for shatter-resistant lenses, safety glass, and phone case shells; it resists scratches and holds its shape. A dual-layer case combines both: TPU inside for impact, polycarbonate outside for scratch resistance and to carry a printed design.

Should I worry about smell or chemicals from a new case?

A very new case can have a faint plastic smell for the first day or two — that's normal residual manufacturing scent and it airs out. A case that smells strongly of solvent, has an oily surface, or leaves marks on your hand isn't right and should be returned. Reputable brands use compliant materials that meet EU and US consumer-product standards for the plastics they contain.

What materials do Miarobi cases use?

Dual-layer construction: a shock-absorbing TPU inner layer and a scratch-resistant polycarbonate outer shell, with the artwork printed on the polycarbonate using UV-cured pigment ink. Made-to-order in Vilnius, in the European Union. We describe the materials honestly — we don't publish independent food-grade or medical-grade certifications for the cases, because we don't have them. What we do have is normal, compliant consumer-product plastics.
